A very unique species of newt endemic to the Zagros Mountain Range of Southern and Eastern Kurdistan. In the Kurdistan Region, it inhabits freshwater habitats in mountainous areas and is distributed across Halabja and Sulaymaniyah governorates. This species is an important bioindicator of healthy ecosystems and clean freshwater. It plays a vital role in maintaining aquatic ecosystems and supporting the plant communities associated with riverine habitats.
